With the need to enlarge the retail area of their New York flagship store, Louis Vuitton, Moet Hennessey, in conjunction with their North American division embarked on a major transformation of this property.
After acquiring the neighbouring property to the north, a 20 story silver tower was designed to expand the 1 East 57th Street building requiring the razing of the 10 story building.
The expansion was structurally complex as the project was required to have a seamless blending of the existing building to the extension, with matching floor to floor heights. The present mechanical plant was to be entirely relocated to gain additional selling area. The interior program called for the entire retail and back of house spaces to be gutted and completely renovated with entirely new infrastructure and services.
The project required all executive office floors to be fully occupied during construction. Retail floors were to be occupied for the longest duration possible requiring the entire core and shell of the expansion to be constructed on a temporary prop system.
The exterior of the building was to be completely restored under this renovation using Georgian marble from the original quarry and the custom designed curtain wall was to be replicated with the addition of an expanded 5th Avenue entrance with a new awning.
