This project involved the retrofit of an existing stage with a new bandshell cover in the heart of Central Park. The design achieved the clients' primary need of a temporary structure through the economics of ease of installation.
The facility is a completely deployable structure that can be entirely removed when not in use. This feature is within the strict regulatory requirements of the park, thereby allowing full use of the play field during the fall, winter, and spring.
Using the existing columns of the previous stage canopy and installing a motorized winch system, the aluminium canopy is first assembled on the field and hoisted to the masts by traveling the two diagonal guide rails being pinned off at its installation height.
The portable stage is then installed beneath the canopy. The outcome is a refreshing venue that boasts a diverse line-up of music, dance, and performance arts, including the Good Morning America GMA Summer Concert Series and the annual SummerStage Festival.
